Kangaroo sketch, 1770. First sketch of a kangaroo (family Macropodidae) by a European. It was drawn by Sydney Parkinson (1745-1771) in 1770. Parkinson was employed as a botanical artist on board HMS Endeavor, sailed by James Cook (1728-1779) on his first voyage (1768-1771). The journey took the crew around the South Pacific, reaching New Zealand and the east coast of Australia.
