This photograph shows First Lieutenant John Newport Greene, the first man to receive the new American decoration for valor in battle. Lt. Greene, originally from Staunton, Virginia, served with the Nobton-Harjes Field Ambulance Service before joining the US Field Artillery. He was recommended for promotion by General Pershing and received his First Lieutenancy. While on duty near Toul, he was struck by a hand grenade.
