F DIALS we may form twoclasses, portable and dials have in thisbook a special chapter ; as doalso noon-marks or meridianlines and spot-dials, ceiling-dials, and window-dials whichare not in one sense separateobjects. Other dials will beclassed according to the divisions of Messrs. Rossand McGibbon, as formulated in their volume onScottish sun-dials in their book of several volumes, entitled The Castellated and Domestic Architecture ofScotland. The sun-dials of Scotland are the finestin the world, and this noble book is worthy its sub-ject. About two hundred Scottish sun-dials aredescribed in it, and thus a clear idea is given of the 6i. 6i Sun-dials and Roses of Yesterday art of dial-making of the sixteenth to the nineteenthcentury, as practised in Scotland. I am glad toadopt in general the simple and lucid classificationof sun-dials as arranged by these two skilled andlearned architects, and to use somewhat their wordsin describing the classes. The first division is intotwo great classes, the attached and the detached;the former being, as the name would imply, displayedupon the walls of some building, and often of slightimportance in the general scheme of the edifice;while the second class, dials standing on their ownspecial pedestals, are often of much monumentalimportance. The attached dials are divided intosix classes : — 1. Single-faced dials. 2. Dials with two faces placed generally on cor-ners of buildings. 3. Dials with two or more faces projected oncorbels. 4. Terminal dials. 5
