Phoenix Zoolights - A Holiday Tradition
Every Christmas season for the more than two decades, the Phoenix Zoo has decorated its grounds, originally with hundreds of thousands, and now with millions of tiny lights. Attending ZooLights has become a beloved family holiday tradition for most Phoenix families with children (and some without). In 1997, our family experienced the magic of ZooLights in a very special way. My wife's daughter and her boyfriend came to visit during the later stages of my wife's battle with ovarian cancer. While her daughter went shopping for a few groceries, her boyfriend showed us THE RING and asked my wife's permission to marry her daughter. Of course, she said "Yes". But he did not have an idea where to "pop the question" — so I suggested ZooLights. They went, he asked, she said "Yes" — a moment all of us will always remember. When they returned home, my stepdaughter held out her hand so I could see the ring then said with fake anger in her voice, "YOU KNEW!!!" Yes, her mom and I both knew and were so happy for them. Sadly, my wife did not live long enough to attend the wedding but she was certainly with us in spirit.
