Harriet and I love trees. They areour pets, and wethink as much ofthem as we do of theanimals and birds onthe farm. It had sometimesoccurred to me that aneed existed in thiscountry for a simple,practical, inexpen-sive, boiled-down yet complete, printed talk on thesubject of tree fruits, — a talk that would help theamateur as well as the more experienced publishers encouraged the idea, saying thatrequests for such a treatise had often been receivedat their office during the past few years. Well—tomake a long story short—this book is largely theresult of their encouragement and kindness; withoutsuch helps I very much doubt whether the idea everwould have materialized into clear type.
