The inscription from his friends is engraved on the top band of the scabbard. Griswold, a twenty year old clerk from Boston, was a combat veteran of the 30th Massachussets when he received his commission as a first Lieutenant. He served as Quartermaster of the 75th USCT and was kept in service after his regiment was mustered out because the army required his service. He was finally mustered out in December, 1865. He moved to California where he engaged in real estate and railroad development. He died in 1903. His regiment, one of the early Louisiana Native Guard Corps D’Afrique units before becoming designated as the 75th United States Colored Infantry, was engaged in several battles including Port Hudson.
