Historical marker in Washington Boro, PA showing the 40th parallel.
A marker noting the parallel 40° north, which formed the original northern boundary of the British Colony of Maryland. A subsequent grant made the Colony of Pennsylvania's border unclear. The Mason–Dixon Line was drawn between 1763 and 1767 as the compromise boundary.
