Ostia Antica was the harbour city of ancient Rome, and nowadays is a large archeological site close to the modern town of Ostia. "Ostia" in Latin means "mouth". At the mouth of the River Tiber, Ostia was Rome's seaport, abandoned for the changes of the river course, and is noted for the excellent preservation of its ancient buildings. The heavy sedimentation of the river made difficult to maintain Ostia so emperors Claudius and Trajan established a new port on the Fiumicino in the 1st century AD. Both ports were abandoned due to silting. Ostia is one of the most important and well-known of the italian archeological sites, and one of the dead cities of the romans that survived in the original aspect. The archeological site attract millions of people every year.
