Total solar eclipse of 1882 and comet. This total solar eclipse took place on 15 May 1882, and was visible from Egypt where observers saw a sungrazing comet (Kreutz Sungrazer, right of Sun) at the moment of totality. The comet was seen to move during the 1 minute and 50 seconds of totality as the Moon passed in front of the Sun. Such comets pass very close to the Sun, moving at speeds of some 500 kilometres per second. The eclipse dimmed the sky, allowing both the comet and the sun's corona (outer atmosphere) to be seen. Total solar eclipses usually occur less than once a year, and can only be seen from a small area of the Earth's surface.
