Trapeziumectomy wrist operation. Surgeon injecting local anaesthetic to help numb the wrist following a trapeziumectomy, an operation to remove the trapezium bone from the wrist. The patient is a 64-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by the immune system attacking the body's own tissues, causing progressive joint and cartilage destruction. Surgery is used to remove destroyed tissues.
