AGAR, John Giraud, lawyer, was bom atNew Orleans, La., June 3, 1856. His mother wasTheresa Price, a native of Louisville, Ky., and de-scendant and kinswoman of the earlier settlers ofthat state. She was a woman of much force ofcharacter and sweetness of disposition, and fromher Mr. Agar has inherited those qualities. Hisfather, William Agar, sprang from one of the an-cient families of county Carlow,Ireland, and early in life was sentto New Orleans,where his naturalability and family influence soonplaced him in the front rank ofthe mercantile community. Dur-ing the civil war John G. Agarwas a boy, and like many boys ofthat epoch had his intelligenceand energy quickened by the ex-citing scences of which he was,perforce, a spectator. During thisunsettled time he was taught athome by his parents and privatetutors, but at the same time hisnatural intelligence enabled himto understand something of themeaning of the conflict that wasthen raging.
