An ex-plosion of gas had taken place, causedby the breaking of an eight inch gasmain in the basement. By some meansthe escaping gas had become ignited and the broken main was pouring out avolume of flame to its full by Captain Russell White andprovided with Babcock extinguishers,the patrolmen descended to the basementand soon extinguished the flame. Theescaping gas immediately filled the vaultsand drove the men out. A second ex-plosion occurred whilst some thirty men.
