A tranquil scene by Thames at Oxford, as a houseboat passes under Folly Bridge on a bright, winter morning. This stone bridge, erected from 1825-27, carries the Abingdon Road south from the centre of the city. It's not clear how the bridge got its name, though. It is believed to stand at the site of the ancient ford over which oxen could be driven across the Isis, the ancient name of the Thames in the Oxford area, into the city. Actually, that's how the place got its name - 'Ox- ford'. Not a lot of folk know
