I.— THOSE WHO SAW SERVICE AT THE FRONT. QUITE a number of recruits came to the Twenty-fourthMichigan but only a small part of them saw service at thefront. The war history of the regiment was made by the1026 original members and 216 recruits who joined it at thefront. They began to come in during the spring of 1864, while theregiment was wintering near Culpepper Court House, and are knownas Culpepper Recruits, to distinguish them from those who joinedthe regiment at Camp Butler, near Springfield, Illinois. These earlierrecruits joined at a critical period of the war and are entitled to sharein full the honors of the regiment, as they helped fight some of theseverest battles in which it was engaged. Some of them were placedin the ranks even during an engagement, and were killed or wound
