I Chemical News,Aug. 4, 1911 AN IMPROVED SOXHLET OSWALD SILBERRAD, The object of this apparatus is to save all trouble in fittingup. Every chemist is familiar with the troublesome andunsatisfactory cork joint between the top of a Soxhletextractor and the lower end of the reflux condenserattached thereto, to say nothing of the clamps, &c., re-quired for supporting so cumbersome an arrangement. In. the present apparatus this is entirely done away with bysimply inserting a bulbous Walters-condenser into the openend of the Soxhlet tube, somewhat lengthened for thepurpose. The exact form of apparatus adopted, whichmay be procured from Messrs. Townson and Mercer, isshown in the accompanymg diagram. SOME NOTES ON THE SETTING OF W. A. B. WALLING. During the course of some researches on cement it wasfound necessary to investigate a statement occurring in Thorpes Dictionary of Applied Chemistry, and some ofthe results obtained have an interesting bearing on thisstatement. In Thorpe (vol. i., p. 477) some figures, relating to acement manufactured from a stone quarried in the neigh-bourhood of Heidelberg, are given. The following theories as to the setting of this cementare advanced in Thorpes Dictionary :—
