Mr. Hedley is a native ofMaidstone, in the county of Kent. Eng-land, having been born there in 1861. Hebegan practical work as an apprenticewhen 13 years old and when he had com-pleted his time he came to the UnitedStates, where he worked in the JerseyCity shops of the Erie Railroad. Hewent from there to the New YorkCentral; after a short time he leftthat road to become an inspectoron the Third Avenue division ofthe Manhattan Elevated Railroad in New^)rk; later he became general foremanof the West Side division of the sameroad. Then he was appointed mastermechanic on the Kings County ElevatedRailroad in Brooklyn. His next movewas to Chicago where he took charge ofthe Lake Street Elevated Railroad in thatcity.
