Light micrograph of an undecalcified, stained section through the periodontal ligament of a rat tooth. Note the osteoclastic resorption of the alveolar bone wall oriented towards to the tooth root. Tissues seen are; 1: enamel; 2: root dentin; 3: root cementum; 4: Sharpey's collagen fibres anchored in root cementum; 5: alveolar bone: 6: osteoclastic lacuna.
