Broccoli. Light micrograph of part of a thinly sliced section across a stalk from a broccoli plant (Brassica oleracea italica). A pale outer layer surrounds a ring of vascular bundles (oval) that supports the soft central pith that makes up most of the stalk. The vascular bundles of a vascular plant contain the xylem and phloem, tissues that transport nutrients and water around the plant. Broccoli is a source of vitamins A and C, and contains chemicals that are thought to reduce the risk of colon cancer. Darkfield illumination. Magnification: x15 at 6x7cm size.
