Flagellation whip. Artwork of an 'aculeatum flagellum' (stinging whip to flagellate) being held in a hand. The text is in Latin. The practice of flagellation originates from the 'Flagellation of Christ' episode, where Christ was whipped prior to his crucifixion. Some monastic orders practice flagellation to identify with the suffering of Christ. This artwork is from 'Historia admiranda de Iesu Christi stigmatibus' (1607) by the Italian archbishop Alfonso Paleotti (1531-1610).
