Ulm, Baden-Württemberg, Germany: blue and brown fish swim freely in the lowest panels of the colourful Freiheitsfenster (Freedom or Liberty Window) in the south aisle of the Ulmer Münster (Ulm Minster or Cathedral). The high, three-light window was filled with vibrant modern designs by the renowned German painter and stained glass artist Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen (1920-2010) to replace late-19th century glass blown out by Allied bombing during the Second World War. Medieval stained glass in the cathedral survived because it had been removed for security. Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen lived at Buoch, near Stuttgart, and after the Second World War, he studied stained glass and mosaic art and design under Professor Rudolf Yelins at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts. He specialised in architectural stained glass and designed windows for more than 100 churches all over the world, as well as producing individual stained glass panels, paintings, drawings and etchings. Elsewhere in Germany, von Stockhausen’s stained glass windows can be seen in Berlin and in towns and cities including Bonn, Braunschweig, Dortmund, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Heilbronn, Kassel, Koblenz, Köln, Leipzig, Mainz, Munich and Speyer. His creations are also in Dublin, Ireland, in Cambridge and Cardiff (UK) and in New Hampshire and Seattle (US).
