T-cell receptor - MHC complex. Computer model showing the molecular structure of a T-cell receptor (TCR, pink and blue) bound to an allogeneic (non-self) major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecule (purple, grey and green). TCRs are found on the surface of T-cells, a type of white blood cell (lymphocyte). T-cells are part of the body's immune response. Engagement of the TCR with an antigen results in activation of its T-cell through a series of biochemical events, mediated by associated enzymes, co-receptors, and specialized accessory molecules. MHCs indicate whether a cell (or cells) is from the same organism as the T-cell. If they are non-self then an immune response is triggered and the T-cell receptors are configured to recognise the MHC.
