LOS ANGELES, CAL. The Market. "The greatest heat in twenty-two J ears" is the report of the weather man for September 17, the thermometer re- cording 117 degrees in the middle of the day. The most assiduous of Los Angeles boosters had to admit it was hot. The wind came from the desert, and as early as 5 a. m. there was a choking stuffiness in the atmosphere that fortunately is as rare here as it is unpleasant. Flow- ers simply wilted, and the basement stores were the only places where life was worth living. Fashion show orders are coming in freely and it looks now as though the denrand would be excep- tional. Stock of all kinds is about equal to the demand, the only shortage being in good greenhouse carnations. Chrysan- themums are coming along more freely and the quality is good. Koses are poor in every case, the first flowers from the young stock being over. Funeral work has kept up well, helping out with tran- sient business. Quite a scarcity de- velops once in a while in the cheaper grades of stock, and for several weeks now there has been difficulty in pro- curing sufficient valley. Orchids are scarce, as are greens also. It is becoming more and more ap- parent that a broader distinction will have to be made between the whole- sale and retail ends of the business here. The retailers complain that whole- salers cultivate a trade in "red vio- lets," but the latter say that growers p
