Flour mill, 16th-century artwork. Men milling flour in a mill driven by human power, rather than wind or water. The mill operators are turning wheels on the central level to power the mill on the upper level. Other workers are carrying bags of grain and flour. This is figure 27 from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The Latin title of the book was 'Theatrum instrumentorum et machinarum' (Theatre of machines and instruments). It was originally published in around 1572. This engraving is from the 1582 edition, published in Lyon by the publisher Barthelemy Vincent.
