Norway and its glaciers, visited in 1851 : followed by journals of excursions in the high Alps of Dauphné, Berne and Savoy . called Auf derPlatte. In the more immediate foreground, was a solitarygreen meadow, quite uninhabited, but containing two orthree barns, reached by a lofty and picturesque woodenbridge across the Massa, which foams and roars beneath ina terrific manner. A little lower, the torrent is crossed bya water conduit, which conveys a stream from the BellAlp all the way to the meadows of Ried, near the chaletsof Morill (which are destitute of water), the distance being-several leagues. The conduit is said to be carried alongthe face of the precipices through the gorge of the Massa, with great boldness, at a dizzy elevation, and the peasantsare accustomed to pass from one place to the other, bymeans of the precarious footing which it affords. The wayto Briegg from the meadow just mentioned, offers no diffi-culty, but many picturesque sites, and everywhere may beseen the astonishing forms of the roches moutonnees, whichhave evidently been abraded under the anciently extendedice of Aletsch. In a former work I have described tlie greater part ofthe chain or mountain group of Mont Blanc, particularlywith reference to its glaciers. It is remarkable not less on account of its isolation, both geologically and topographically, from the rest of the AN UNDESCRIBED PASS OF THE CHAIN OF MONT BLANC. 331 Alp
