Historically silversmiths were also known as goldsmiths and belonged to the same guild, but in modern times there are silversmith societies and guilds which are dedicated to the silversmiths art and keeping traditional approaches alive. The ancient silversmith was often thought of as somewhat akin to a sculptor and sought out to create works of art in silver for lord and ladies of the elite upper class of every culture, silver was even worth more than gold in Egypt and some parts of Asia for many years.
