Better tear out all the old vines and burn them. If a horse can be used inside, give the beds a good plow- ing up "With a horse cultivator as previously , then mulch heav- ily with coarse manure and water once a week. Thus treated the beds are enriched and mellowed for the winter work. It used to be the practice to allow the beds to dry out and bake hard for months, but experience has shown the other treatment far su- perior. We have practiced this method of mulching for years outdoors with only excellent results. When the mulch is removed the ground will be moist, mellow and rich and in the best possible condition for planting. Our scientists tell us that by keeping the beds moist we encourage the various disease germs into action which exhausts them, when if kept dry, they would be dormant waiting for our crops to be planted and ready to at- tack it. This mulch can be spaded un- der when planting time comes, or the coarsest removed. If the soil is not well supplied with humus, better spade it under.
