Artist/engraver/cartographer: J. Andriveau-Goujon. Provenance: "Atlas Universel", Rue du Bac No 21, Paris. Type: Antique 19th century engraved atlas map with old colour. There was significant uncertainty among European geographers at the time of publication about much of the geography of the African interior. The inset map of Africa shows two non-existent mountain ranges - the Mountains of Kong, and the Mountains of the Moon. The erroneous inclusion of the latter has required the cartographer incorrectly to show the course of the White Nile as flowing westward along the northern side of this imaginary range, rather than south to Lake Victoria. The cartographer has however correctly assumed the route and direction of flow of the Niger river
