The image is of the famous Butte de Warlencourt a medieval Ancient Tumulus mound some 20metres high that was viciously fought over by the British and Germans alike sure various stages of the Battle of the Somme. While the Butte seemed to offer a military advantage due to its height making observations over the surrounding countryside, militarily it was difficult to defend being exposed on all sides which meant whoever held the Butte would be subjected to well aimed artillery fire
