A club shield for the "Gioco del Ponte", Pisa, 17th/18th century A thick wooden shield painted in a checkerboard pattern on the front. A slight recess in back with two wooden grips fastened by nails. The wood somewhat worm eaten in places, the front shows large areas of splintering on the paintwork. Length cm. Rare shield type before 1761 (acceptance stamp and date were on the back later) as used in the bridge game in Pisa between 1568 and 1807 (with various interruptions). Cf. L.
