Earth at night. Computer artwork of the Earth at night, centred on Europe. Lights (yellow) mark the major European population centres and the main cities, as well as those of North Africa and parts of Asia. The Moon is at upper left. The Earth rotates from west to east (here, left to right), which causes the rising and setting of the Sun in the sky. Here, a thin crescent (left) shows the dusk terminator, the line separating day from night. As the Earth rotates, Europe will move towards the dawn terminator (not seen), where the Sun will be seen rising in the east at the start of a new day. The bright band emerging from behind the Earth is part of our view of the Milky Way galaxy from the inside.
