Its status after peacehad been declared was uncertain until 1796, whenEngland ceded it to the United States, and it held that position and was also military command-er when, eaily in the war of 1812, the Britishdemanded the surrender of Detroit, to which heyielded, for which he was severely censured, andfrom which the city was rescued by the victory ofLake Erie (Commodore Perry), in 1813. GeneralLewis Cass was soon after appointed governor of theterritory. Michigan was admitted into the Union in1837.
