Harry Grindell Matthews (1880-1941), British inventor. Matthews became famous for his claim in the 1920s to have invented a death ray. This was one of a succession of dubious claims made by Matthews, often involving newspaper publicity and threats to sell the technology to foreign governments. Matthews raised money from investors several times, but his projects invariably ended in failure and bankruptcy. In 1938, he married a Polish-US singer and heiress three years before his death. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
