Its population is from 15,000to 20,000, of which Butte City claims 10,000 to 12,000. It is situatedbut a few miles from the terminus of the Utah and Northern RacineRailroads. The freight handled in 1883 was 169,000,000 pounds, andin 1884, 250,000,000 pounds. It is one of the greatest quartz miningdistricts in the world. Two hundred and fifty lodes have beenpatented, of which but twenty-five yield a monthly sum of $300, number of stamps at work aggregate 200, and fifteen furnaceslikewise are in constant operation.
