Leyden jar. 19th Century artwork of a Leyden jar, the earliest form of capacitor, a device for storing electrical charge. It consists of a glass jar with a layer of metal foil on the outside and a similar layer on the inside. A metal rod, the electrode, passes through the neck of the bottle and is connected to the inner inner foil. The jar is charged by an electrostatic generator connected to the electrode.
