The ship, tied up at Pier 4 in Hoboken, New Jersey, had 9,470 troops, mostly African American, including the complete 371st and 372nd Infantry, part of the 368th, and 2,132 sick and wounded soldiers. Both the 371st and 372nd were decorated with the Croix de Guerre and were brigaded with the French. [Source: Photographs of American Military Activities during World War One - SC37352]
