Rowbotham vaporizers, 20th century. A vaporizer converts a volatile liquid anaesthetic into gaseous form. In the device the anaesthetic vapour is mixed with a flow of gas such as oxygen or air, and delivered at the correct concentration to the patient for anesthesia during surgery. The wicks draw the liquid anaesthetic up by capillary action, increasing the surface area from which it can evaporate. Controls on the top can vary the ratio of air and anaesthetic vapour delivered to the patient.
