In general appearance the tree resembles the orange tree, havingshining deep-green leaves. It is dioecious, but to facilitate fertilizationit is a common practice to graft staminate branches on the pistillate trees. The nutmeg fruit resembles a peach in shape and size. On ripeningthe fleshy pericarp splits into two halves, disclosing the dark-brown seedclosely clasped by the deep-red branching arillus (Fig. 448).
