St. Hilarion Castle ruins near Kyrenia, North Cyprus The castle lies in the Kyrenia mountain range. Originally a monastery named after a 10th century monk who chose the site for a hermitage and church. In the 11th century the Byzantines began fortifications. During the reign of the Lusignans the castle was the focus of a 4 year struggle between the Holy Roman Empire and John d'Ibelin for control of the island. Much was demolished in the 15th century by the Venetians
