ESA base on Mars. Artwork of plans for a Mars base and rover, drawn up by the European Space Agency (ESA). The base is similar to that planned for ESA's Aurora programme, which aims to explore the Solar System using robotic spacecraft and human spaceflight. This includes missions to Mars such as ExoMars. Some missions, such as the planned Mars Sample Return landers, will be designed to produce fuel on the surface (an 'in situ propellant production unit') to allow samples to be returned to Earth from Mars. Hydrogen would be reacted with carbon dioxide in the Martian atmosphere to produce methane fuel.
