Artery anatomy, computer artwork. At the centre of the artery is the lumen, with three red blood cells (erythrocytes, bottom right). The inner layer of the artery is the tunica intima, which consists of endothelial cells. Around this is a layer of elastin, and then the tunica media, a layer of smooth muscle. Next is the tunica externa, a layer of fibrous connective tissue. The outermost layer is the serosa, which consists of epithelial cells. Arteries are muscular elastic tubes that carry blood away from the heart.
