There is no pressureapplied, the mould being hinged, and when the cement hasbecome firm enough the mould is opened and removed, leaving the briquette on the pallet or board, from which it isin due course taken and placed in the water cistern. There is much advantage realized in obtaining briquettes Fig. Pallants Testing Machine. by this accurate method, as it has been found that thosebriquettes moulded by the spring press are frequently de-fective when any carelessness has arisen in the process ofmoulding. Unless the spring press is used with discretion, and the briquette released at the exact time, two kinds ofdanger arise: one being the result of irregular pressure, and the other occurring if the cement has not lost enough ofits plasticity. In both cases almost imperceptible hair-likecracks are produced, which at the time of testing exert aninjurious influence in the resulting breaking, and as theygenerally occur at the angles and weakest point, their pre-judicial influence is the more dangerous. It is probably the earliest machine that was adoptedby English engineers. The present form is that which wasfirst made, the bri
