Sleeping sickness treatment. View of a man suffering from African sleeping sickness (trypano- somiasis). He is attached to an intravenous (IV) drip through which he is receiving eflornithine. This drug is so effective against the variety of sleeping sickness caused by the parasitic protozoan Trypanosoma gambiense, that it is known as the \resurrection drug\". The protozoa are passed onto humans by blood-sucking tsetse flies, Glossina sp., when they feed. The protozoa infect the blood, lymph nodes, heart and brain causing a fever. Nervous system damage leads to lethargy and tremors. Without treatment, fatal damage to the heart or brain results. Photographed in Uganda."
