In the prothorax the endotergites are repre-sented only by a rather indefinite group of processes on the hypomerain the region of the coxal cavity and the trochantin. These bear alarge muscle disk (fig. 5 A). In the mesothorax the anterior marginof the prescutum is deflexed to form a transverse ridge—the ante-costal ridge or prephragma (prph), which bears a pair of large muscle NO. 13 STAPH YLINIDAE BLACKWELDER 29 disks (rndts) at its ends. There is apparently just behind this smallridge and corresponding with a line or suture on the ectal surface, theprescutal suture (fig. 4 A, pscs), a large transverse phragma ex-. On the midline this phragma 30 SMITHSONIAN MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTIONS VOL. 94 bears a longitudinal ridge (ppr), and a rounded posterior lobe nextto it on each side (ppl). The ental side of the posterior notal wingprocesses (pnp) of the scutum bears a small transverse phragma ofunknown homology. The endotergites of the metathorax are much more extensive thanthose of the mesothorax. The most conspicuous are the two V-ridges(figs. 4 F, 5 A, vr) converging anteriorly near the center of the seg-ment. These mark the lateral boundaries of the scutellum but are notmarked on the ectal surface by definite sutures. Posteriorly eachV-ridge seems to coalesce with
