Rhodes, of Freeport, 77 years old, should bementioned among the oldest residents. Latton Smith is a native of the county, and has been abusiness man in Hempstead for many years; he is 73years old. Peter T. Hewlett, of East Rockaway, was born in1792. His father, Oliver Hewlett, moved into the housewhere P. T. now lives in April 1800. He has been a farmerand carriage-maker. He is a member of St. GeorgesChurch at Hempstead, and assisted at the raising of HEMPSTEADS OLDEST INHABITANTS—THE JERUSALEM PURCHASE. 157 William Caffray was born in county Kildare, Ireland,February 28th 1805, and came to America in 1834,settling at Far Rockaway, where he has since that time what is now Far Rockaway village was thecommons, there being only two or three houses on thebeach besides the Pavilion (destroyed by fire), the erec-tion of which was commenced in 1832 and finished in1834. It was built by a company of sixty gentlemenfrom New York. Mr. Caffray was for several years alaboring man, but in 1845 purchased what is now theTransatlantic Hotel, of which he has since been proprie-tor. Thomas Jeffrey was born in England, in 1805, andsettled in Jerusalem about 1835, clearing his farm froma wilderness of bushes and briars.
