Statue of Sir Francis Drake on Plymouth Hoe, England

Sir Francis Drake Statue on Plymouth Hoe England UK, English sea captain, navigator and explorer of the Elizabethan age. He is famous for (among other things) leading the first English circumnavigation of the world, from 1577 to 1580. The most famous anecdote about Drake is that he was playing a game of bowls on Plymouth Hoe. On being warned of the approach of the Spanish fleet, Drake is said to have remarked that there was plenty of time to finish the game and still beat the Spaniards.
