Drexel, formerly a mem-ber of the firm of Drexel andCompany, and since that timehas taken an active part in themanagement of the businessaffairs of his estate. In February, 1S91, he waselected to Select Council from the Thirty-fifth Ward, in which bodyhe attained a prominent position and has advocated many promi-nent measures ; for instance, the North-eastern Elevated Railroad,the changing of the citys deposits and many local matters. It isneedless to say that he occupies a very prominent position insocial his confidence in the opportunities the United States offers to theindustrious and energetic citizen. He has since had the satisfac-tion of bringing to the United States, his parents who are still liv-ing, ami a brother and sister. After remaining in New York Citya short time, Mr. OCallaghan came to Philadelphia, which city hehas made his permanent home, and from 1875 to 1S82 was engagedin commercial pursuits. Always a student he early took a deep interest in the study ofour government and institutions, and of public questions, and wasled by his investigations on attaining his majority and becoming acitizen to identify himself with the Republican party. He pos-sesses many of the gifts of the born orator to which he adds the cul-ture of the student. He is very much in demand as a politicalspeaker and he does his share of the political work willingly, whileat the same time he is entirely free from political ambition, and isentirely devoted to
