Hamilton Park Cottage, Hamilton Park, New Brighton, Staten Island. Built between 1859 and 1872.

Hamilton Park was a planned suburban community based on the bucolic ideas of Andrew Jackson Downing. Charles Kennedy Hamilton purchased 32 acres in a hilly area in New Brighton in 1851 and 1852. Three or four houses were constructed in the 1850s, with a dozen additional cottages added in the 1860s. The houses were sited on winding paths with generous yards. Hamilton defaulted on his mortgage in 1878, and the suburban park went into receivership. In 1894, the present street grid was imposed and building lots sold off. By the 1920s, the former summer cottages were surrounded by a sea of middle-class houses.
