The St Lawrence Church from the River Eden, Appleby. Cumbria. SCO 8647

The church is at the lower end of Boroughgate beyond the cloisters which were designed by Sir Robert Smirke in 1811. The oldest part of the church (the lower part of the tower) dates from the 12th Century. Following the destruction during the Border Wars came 14th Century rebuilding, and restoration in the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries. Work from all these periods can be seen. The porch was built about 1300, but the arch with its dog-tooth moulding is about 100 years older. In the Baptistry, the font is of Frosterly marble from Weardale, dating from the 19th Century. There are some chained books dating from 1631, three volumes of Foxes Acts and Monuments of the Martyrs'. The church stands at the lower end of Boroughgate beyond the cloisters which were designed in 1811 by Sir Robert Smirke, the architect of Lowther Castle, as replacements for older buildings. The church tower has a Norman base; the nave is early fourteenth-century. The church was twice badly damaged by fire during Scottish raids but was restored by Lady Anne Clifford in 1654. Her tomb is in the north aisle, close to that of her mother, Margaret, Countess of Cumberland. The organ, which has a beautiful tone, is one of the oldest working organs in England. It was moved here from Carlisle Cathedral in 1684. In 1976 it was restored and reinstated in its original position. The closure of Appleby Castle during the summer months means that this peaceful backwater remains somewhat quiet almost all year round. Its main status — with very little industry in Cumbria — is to sell goods to the farming communities round about. Many residents commute to jobs elsewhere. The bypass around the town does not help, as potential passing trade does not often enter the town. However, the annual Appleby Horse Fair, held regularly in early June, earliest record since the 12th century with a charter made by Henry II (however it is thought to have a longer tradition), brings Gypsies from all over Britain.
