Polygonum Sachalinense. (Sacaline.) This hardy, perennial plant is a native of the Island of Saghaliu, between Japan and Siberia. It has been known to European and American nursery- men for many years, but its merits as a forage plant have only lately been pointed out. It grows well in the poorest soils, is perfectly hardy, and endures the extremes of heat and cold. It grows to a height of ten or twelve feet, and can be cut two or three times a season. The stems and leaves, which are very nutritious, are said to be eaten either green or dry, by cattle and sheep. In grading off, or laying out a piece of ground for a lawn, great care should be exercised to ob- tain the proper grade and slope, and perfect the general plan of the grounds, before attempting to sow any seed at all. After the correct grade has been obtained, and the surface sufficiently Sacaline. plowed or spaded, it should be thoroughly harrowed, to pulverize the lumps so left, that there may be at least five or ten inches of good, rich soil over the whole surface. Then all the roots and loose stones should be removed, and the surface bushed or raked down perfectly smooth and in a suitable condition for successful germination and growth of the fine seeds which are used for this kind of seeding.
