He first worked as a farmhand at Waldeck, Saskatchewan, and later homesteaded and farmed at Burnham until 1922. A lifelong interest in nature study helped him when he began working at the Dominion Experimental Station at Swift Current, Saskatchewan, in 1926. As an assistant to the late Dr. Sidney Barnes of the Soils Research Laboratory, Mr. Budd assisted in studies on the taxonomy of weeds and the physiology of weed seeds until 1944. Although he had no formal training in botany, Mr. Budd was a keen student of taxonomy.
